"Several other illustrations, for which we could not here find room, will be given in the Descriptive and Annotated Catalogue of the Exhibition--in which the machinery will be more fully described."--Page [vi]. The annotated catalog was published under title: Science and mechanism. New York : G.P. Putnam and Company ; London : Sampson Low, Son and Company, 1854.
Priced bound at $4.50 (or $5.00 bound with bevelled boards and gilt edges); also available bound in 1 volume with Science and mechanism for $6.50.
Originally issued in parts. "The quarto parts of the Illustrated Record were printed during the Exhibition in the east nave of the Crystal Palace, the illustrations on an Adams Press and the text on a Taylor Press. [The two presses are described and illustrated on page 60.] Putnam's intention was to publish twenty-six weekly numbers containing four double-column pages of text and four pages each of illustrations and advertisements. Instead, between July 14, 1853 and January 1854 they issued seven semi-monthly double numbers and three quadruple numbers."--E. The plates include the engraved title, 1 chromoxylograph of tile patterns and 5 wood engravings. A deluxe issue, advertised as available in 1855, added 12 photographs (salted paper prints).
The wood-engraved plates and text illustrations are by J.W. and N. Orr, T. Cox, H. Jewitt, Leslie & Hooper, N. Levy, J.H. Richardson, W. Roberts, Whitney, Jocelyn, & Annin, and others after daguerreotypes by H. Whittemore (see page [vi]).
