In 1956, photographer Gilles Ehrmann travelled to the French and Italian countrysides to document the growing Art Brut movement in Europe. The results of the journey is this book, Les inspirés et leurs demeures (The inspired and their abodes). Included in the volume are portraits of Art Brut creators such as Gaston Chaissac, Fréderic Séron, Hyppolite Massé and Joseph Marmin, and images of their creations such as Palais Idéal of facteur Cheval, the Rochers Sculptés by Abbé Fouré or the Maison Picassiette by Raymond Isidore, and the Bomarzo gardens in Italy.
