Summary:

In 1969 Yale University announced a two-stage competition to design a new building for its mathematics department. The competition was unusual because it asked for a "workable, economical, generally nonmonumental" building that responded to an exacting program and a difficult site. The response was notable-1600 applicants and 468 entries-and the results were interesting because the unanimously chosen winner was Venturi and Rauch, the Philadelphia firm whose designs have stirred great controversy in the profession. This book is an illustrated chronicle of the competition. The editors examine not only the winning design but a cross section of the other entries, which show a broad and vivid array of serious solutions to a complex design problem. Over 150 reproductions illustrate in detail the designs of Venturi and Rauch, the other four finalists, and about twenty-five selected entrants. This book provides an illuminating look at the state of American architecture fifty years after the start of the Modern Movement. -- from book jacket.
