Belle Greene (1879-1950) served as personal librarian, 1905-1924, to J.P. Morgan and later as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library, from 1924 until her retirement in 1948; she was daughter of Richard Greener, the first African American man to graduate from Harvard, and a former member of the University of South Carolina faculty.
