St. Werburg's Abbey, founded in 1093 by Hugh of Avanches, 2nd Earl of Chester, was a Benedictine monastery. In 1540 it was taken over by Henry VIII's reformation, and was renamed the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Virgin Mary (Chester). This is a history of the abbey to 1540.
