Kroll Opera, the famous Berlin avant-garde opera-house under the leadership of Otto Klemperer, survived only four years, from the autumn of 1927 until the 3rd of July 1931, the day when, for political and economic reasons, the curtain fell for the last time. In these few years, a time of intellectual activity and incomparable artistic enthusiasm, the Kroll Opera made history both in the field of music and theatre. Apart from model productions of classical operas, Klemperer staged epoch-making works of musicians such as Stravinsky, Hindemith, Milhaud and Schönberg. Artists like de Chirico, Moholy-Nagy, Schlemmer, Caspar Neher and Teo Otto were commissioned as stage designers. Hans Curjel who was stage director for the Kroll Opera from beginning to end recalls this magnificent theatrical experiment and by means of theatre critics and other documents gives the reader insight into the exciting artistic struggles in the Berlin of the twenties.
