A Corner of Empire - for three Empires fought to control the place, the gateway of the West, a key position for the future of Upper Canada and of the great North West beyond. When at last war with Frenchman and American was over here rose the town, the King's town, of the United Empire Loyalists; here was for 60 years the centre of a new trade, till there were no longer forests to fell, and men could build rafts no more; and here for nearly a century has stood a University "on the old Ontario strand". All this for all the world; and for the authors, memories of friendship and happiness, and the "rememberable things" that Nature speaks, in the beauty of a great lake and a great river, open water and open sky.
