"The early stained glass of Christ Church Canterbury is important for its place not only in the history of English painting styles but also in the study of French glass in the period between work at St.- Denis and Chartres. Professor Caviness has closely examined, from scaffolding, all of the windows that remain from the building constructed by William of Sens and English William. With unrivaled first-hand knowledge, she discusses their authenticity, dating, and iconography, and relates them to the art of their time in a way never before attempted. Her interpretation is enriched by 222 illustrations, four of which are reproduced in full color. The author central theme is the development of style in the transitional period between the Romanesque and Gothic. She compares the work of the Canterbury atelier with art done in England and France. From the visual evidence she derives a chronology of glazing and notes that at different times distinctive hands worked on the glass. The earliest of the artists presented will rank with the Morgan Master of the Winchester Bible and even with Nicholas of Verdum. This volume of Emile Male's classic studies of religious iconography traces the sources of the Christian iconographic tradition in the East and its transmission to the monastic art of the West through the intermediary of the miniature. It shows how the tradition was gradually altered and enriched during the twelfth century by Church doctrine, liturgy, drama, the cult of the saints, pilgrimages learning, and the monastic ideal. For this edition, new and exceptionally fine photographs have been obtained of all subjects illustrated in the original work, over a third having been made expressly for this volume. Male's original notes have been verified and editorial notes have been added citing the most recent scholarship. There is also a new amplified index. English editions are planned of Male's other volumes in religious iconography" - Publisher.
