Notes:
According to Nicholas Adams in the Macmillan Encyclopedia, Cataneo's treatise is the last of the comprehensive renaissance architectural treatises (the others being Vitruvius, Alberti, Serlio, Palladio, and Scamozzi). Cataneo considers both military and civil architecture; his view of the city plan and walls as a unified defense organism, rather than simply walls, was of paramount importance for military planning.
Reprinted in 1567, with the addition of four new books.
