Engraved architectural t.p., featuring Minerva on the left, surrounded by armor and objects of learning, such as an armillary sphere, books, painting, architectural square, and small statue of Nike, goddess of victory, and Time on the right, with his scythe and hourglass; a cartouche centered above title contains papal coat of arms of Gregory XIII with his winged dragon.
Du Perac's dedicatory letter to Giacomo Buoncompagni on leaf [1] of second sequence, within elaborate ornamental border featuring scenes of war and peace, papal arms, and portrait medallions of figures representing Virtue and Honor.
Includes architectural plates depicting the major ancient ruins of Rome in their early Renaissance environment, with two or three lines of descriptive text in Italian below the drawings; in some plates, special features are marked with letters to correspond to their respective descriptions. Du Perac includes views of sites such as the triumphal arch of Septimius Severus, Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio), Temple of Antonius and Faustina, Circus Maximus, the Coliseum (Amphitheater of Titus), four of the major "terme" of Rome--the baths of Caracalla, Titus, Diocletian, and Constantine, and Trajan's Column. According to Fowler, "the plates are arranged in the order of the itinerary it was customary for pilgrims of the time to follow. Du Pérac, engraver, painter, and architect arrived in Rome about 1559 and started to work for Lafrery, contributing various prints to his Speculum romanae magnificentiae (Rome 1575). Independently Du Pérac produced many prints of Roman ruins and, together with others, a valuable large map of the city, but his fame rests mostly on I vestigi antichità di Roma."
