Summary:

Greater Than Kings is an illustrated history of Ukranian settlement in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The main focus of the books is the pioneer era, the period between 1891 and 1920. The text is written by Zonia Keywan in a clear English style which is a delight to read. The documentary photographs by Martin Coles are equally reveling and apposite. In each section there are thoughtfully selected letters, photos from family archives and brief eyewitness accounts which have the force of revelation, the urgency of simple, unaffected rural people who are moved by the need to survive in an alien environment. This comprehensive history of the Ukranian settlement will have a broad appeal to readers everywhere. The Ukranian venture had its unique features. But, in many ways, the experience of the pioneer was universal and the encounter of one group stands for the ordeal of many.
