"An attempt has been made in this little book to produce on hand-made paper, composed of linen rags and not of wood-pulp, illustrations as satisfactory in character as it is possible to obtain by the use solely of the reproductive processesof the present day. The plates for the frontispiece in color, and the illustrations on title and on pages 3, 11, 14, 34, 35, 44 are made by half-tone process of a fineness and a delicacy in value not heretofore attempted ..."--Author's note.
