Summary:

"When the Fourth Crusade of Pope Innocent III led to Latin domination of Constantinople in 1204, it marked the beginning of the 'Frankish Middle Ages' in Greece. The monastic orders that came to Greece brought with them the architectural forms of Burgundy, Savoy, and northern Italy. In [this volume], Beata Kitsiki Panagopoulos details the fascinating development of Latin ecclesiastical architecture in Greece. She provides a wealth of new data--including her own excellent photographs and architectural drawings--in a field that has been almost inaccessible to medievalists and art historians. Panagopoulos follows the succession of political masters and religious orders in Greece from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century and shows how they influenced ecclesiastical building in various ways. She then offers a descriptive survey of those Cistercian and Mendicant monasteries that have survived. Her valuable comparative research shows that the aesthetics of these Greek monuments express the rules dictated by their French and Italian monastic orders--humility and simplicity--and that they show little of the Byzantine influence. For each church reviewed, the author sets forth the details of the reconstructed architectural plan, the surrounding buildings of the abbey, probable date of foundation, play of volume, and other vital particulars. The study concludes with a discussion of the few remaining parochial Latin churches and their similarity to monastic churches."--from the inside front and back flaps.
