Summary:

The "Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire des sciences, des arts et des métiers" is a landmark in the revolution in human thought that occurred in the mid-eighteenth century, and it set a seal on the victory of the "philosophical and rationalist spirit" over the forces of traditionalism and reaction. This edition includes all the plates prepared for the Encyclopedia, over 3,000 illustrations in all, covering the whole of that extraordinarily comprehensive collection of material dealt with in the major publishing project undertaken during the eighteenth century. The volumes of plates are a storehouse of evidence regarding the position of science and technology at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. They illustrate every aspect of contemporary knowledge and proficiency, ranging from anatomy to trigonometry, from agriculture to zinc processing, with an amazing number of comprehensive diagrams and drawings, as well as intricate details. The scholar, the technician, and the interested and educated layman will find these volumes an exceptionally rich lode of information and practical ideas. The plates have been reduced to a format that makes them easy to consult and at the same time brings out the splendor of the sophisticated engraving technique in which they were rendered. The plates are introduced in two illuminating essays by French scholars whose field of specialization is the period in which the Encyclopedia was published. Volume V contains indexes designed to help the reader consult the work and long captions giving detailed information about each plate.
