Summary:

"Liberty, Jugendstil, Modernismo, Secessionstil--Art Nouveau architecture embraced many apparently contradictory idioms. Whether the curvilinear style of Horta and Guimard, employing, a vocabulary of ornament based on natural forms or the restrained rectilinear abstraction of Mackintosh or Hoffmann, whose rational response to design problems anticipated the Modern Movement, Art Nouveau architecture was characterised above all by its enthusiastic adoption of ornament. At its most successful, Art Nouveau attained a perfect organic fusion of structure and decoration, and gave rise to some of the most eccentric and imaginative architecture of the last one hundred years. This important book documents for the first time the extraordinary achievements of the architects of the fin de siècle. Organised by country, each chapter is written by a well-known authority, and provides a visual survey of all the regional variations, of the style set against a discussion of the current ideological background. Over 400 photographs, both contemporary and specially commissioned, together with redrawn plans and elevations illustrate the work of Art Nouveau architects in Great Britain, Spain, Belgium, Holland, France, Switzerland, USA, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Austria. The reference section contains over 150 illustrated biographies of the architects and extensive bibliography."--book jacket
