Summary:

It comes as a surprise to many people that early Canadian furniture was not all country pine. This handsome, extensively researched book shows that the heritage of fine craftsmanship in English-Canadian furniture up to about 1830. The stylistic influences, as might be expected, were British and American, but the materials used and the degree or ornamentation reflected local conditions. Canada at the time was a thinly populated series of colonies where people were still coping with the problems of taming the land and surviving the winters. There were few centresof affluence where people aspired to the finer things in life. Nonetheless there have come down to us examples of fine furniture clearly Canadian in origin and displaying the craftsmanship of skilled cabinet-makers rather than the rough simplicity of pioneer furniture. Many pieces are outstanding for their handsome proportions and simple but elegant ornamentation. This is a book for all who love fine furniture. Not only does Donald Webster show and describe more than 300 excellent examples of Canadian Georgian furniture, but he also explores in detail the stylistic influences and the materials used, and explains some of the procedures used in identifying and dating early Canadian furniture" - Publisher.
