Summary:

"British Town and Country Planning is closely watched overseas and yet remains the subject of keen controversy at home. On the one hand it is argued that planning policies have increased the difficulties of securing land for housing, have been inadequate to control urban sprawl and the drift to the South, and have raised the cost of land. On the other hand it is maintained that planning policies have been soundly conceived and need strengthening, that Green Belts must be preserved, that more new towns are required and that controls generally should be increased. These matters form the subject of this book. A short historical introduction leads into an account of the machinery of planning, including regional administration, and the problem with which it has to deal. All aspects of town and country planning are discussed - compensation, betterment and land prices; green belts and new towns; national parks; housing needs, and so on. The books ends with an examination of current problems and the various proposals which have been put forward for dealing with them."--Jacket.
