Summary:

"Sarah Graham-Brown's book is an extended photo-essay about the social and economic life of the Palestinian people in the period 1880 to 1946, spanning the last years of Ottoman rule and the British Mandate period. A long introduction examines the role photographs can play in evoking the past, and sets the political scene for this period: one when Palestine's economy and society were subjected to pressures and changes - first indirect, then direct - from the growing European involvement in the Middle East. Much has been written, both academic and polemical, about these changes but surprisingly little attention has been paid to the daily lives of the people caught up by them. The contemporary photographs used in this essay, accompanied by lengthy captions, reveal a variety of aspects of Palestinian society - from village weddings and family portraits to the dramatic effects of political and economic crises."--Page 4 of cover.
