Lutyens, Mary, 1908-1999.
Edwin Lutyens / by his daughter Mary Lutyens.
London : John Murrary, 1980.
x, 294 pages, 8 unnumbered leaves of plates : illustrations ; 23 cm
Lutyens's preeminence among English architects since Wren was unquestioned in his lifetime and, after a period of disfavor, is almost unquestioned again today; to some he was Wren's superior. Honours, and commissions, were showered upon him in what was seemingly a life of dazzling success. Yet, at the core of this fun-loving, childlike and often frivolous public figure were intense private disappointments, anxieties and frustrations. The subject of his daughter's unique memoir is the man himself, revealed through her own memories and his letters to her mother. Out of it emerges a man with a nobility of character.
