The "sacred sands" are the Indiana Dunes, the natural landscape of shifting sand hills, tamarack swamp, oak forest, gull, tern, spring lupine, and prickly pear cactus on the southern coast of Lake Michigan. For almost a century the people of Chicago came here to celebrate this primitive and sacred center, which seemed to redeem the urban machine through evocation of the unity and interdependency of living things.
