For anyone in government service, going to work each day meant a very long climb up the steps -- A stylized depiction of the Drepung monastery, this painting shows a complex that housed 10,000 monks -- A very young tulka, or reincarnation of a grand lama who is said to have been reincarnated continuously for three hundred years, sits on this throne between his companions in study and play -- This statue of Maitreya, the Buddha to Come, with the founders of Drepung monastery beside him, was part of that monastery where the author received his first religious education and was ordained a monk -- The masks worn by these monk dancers represent the faces of the guardian deities -- This late-eighteenth- or early-nineteenth- century tanka-literally "banner," a Tibetan religious painting on cloth-shows Gautama, the historical Buddha, calling the earth to witness and support his rightful claim to enlightenment, referring to an episode in which he successfully overcame the assaults of the demon Mara --
Buddha Calling the Earth to Witness, a fifteenth-century copper statue from western Tibet, represents Akshobhya, the Immutable Buddha -- The two long pages are from a Tibetan manuscript with musical notation given for some of the words; the figures represent Milarepa, the translator Marpa, and Gampopa -- A dorje (sceptre) and drilbu (bell), the most important ritual objects, symbolizing wisdom and compassion respectively, are handed together to new initiates and ordained monks -- Five important abbots, the master of chanting, the master of discipline, and a young novice, all of the Gelukpa order await a visitor in the courtyard of the Drepung monastery -- The tree of masters, representing the spiritual succession and hierarchy, through whom spiritual teachings are transmitted, is depicted in a tanka -- A ngakpa, a tantric mystic, prepares to celebrate the rite of Cho; in his hands he holds a small tamborine and a trumpet made from a human thigh bone -- The Tingsum nunnery is built on and into the side of a sheer cliff -- Although isolated for the most part from the rest of the world, Tibet has been invaded a number of times -- Gyantse, protected by a hilltop fortress, was the largest caravan stop in the Tsang region -- If a pilgrim to Lhasa believed that this would be the only chance in his life to make the holy pilgrimage around the city on the Lingkor, it was customary to do it fully prostrate, which took from three to five days -- Hundreds of Buddha figures have been carved in the rocks on the south side of Chakpori (Iron Hill) along the Lingkor road in Lhasa -- Travelers pass far below the castle and fortress at Chushul, which in earlier days protected numerous vital trade routes leading to Lhasa -- Two men in a kowa, a coracle made of yak skins stretched over a willow frame, help their horses cross the Tsangpo River -- This cairn of mani stones with its prayer flag has been built by travelers and added to it by others as part of their religious devotions -- Hundreds of monks crowd the courtyard of the Tashilhunpo monastery near Shigatse for a special ceremony -- A barefoot nomad couple in rough clothing graze their dzo, hybrids that are half yak and half cow, on a broad thang, or plain, at Langong --
