The mausoleum honoring sheikh Abu-Said Abul-Khair from Mekhne, who died in the eleventh century in the region of Khorasan of the Gaznevid state (now Turkmenistan), became a destination for Islamic pilgrims for centuries. The ensemble shows eleventh-century brickwork forming an interior of ten by ten meters with niches and a dome; a reconstruction of the fourteenth century demonstrates that the artist-builders of the period were gradually mastering the technology of carved composite tile mosaic.
