The future of humanity is urban. We are facing major problems such as climate change, social inequality, large-scale migration, and resource depletion. Cities (and those who make the city) play an important role in addressing these problems. Human activity is part of a global transition, a permanent metabolism of raw materials, water, energy, food, biomass etc. The linear approach of isolating problems and then unraveling them into bite-sized issues that you can solve, no longer works. The tools that designers have at their disposal are undeveloped. This text offers designers, their commissioners and (local) governments new models and ideas to deal with healthy urban development.
