In the BBC film, Kings of Infinite Space, Charles Jencks debated with Michael Graves and Philip Johnson the merits of Pre-Modern and Post-Modern architecture. This 'book of the film' fills out the whole debate in much greater detail showing the work of the two great American architects--Frank Lloyd Wright and Michael Graves--and connects this up with their sometimes chaotic private lives. Both architects were working during a shift in culture, before and after Modernism, and this naturally added drama to their lives. Wright dominated much architecture, as Graves does today, because he could draw, and as Jencks argues, draw on the whole of Western architecture and its universal forms. This book, with its debates, extensive illustrations and personal stories brings to life two very exceptional architects and the dramatic changes they helped create.--Book cover
