""Pochi alzano la testa per guardare il soffitto, agli Uffizi, ma le volte dei corridoi della galleria fiorentina presentano una decorazione dipinta davvero particolare. Il primo corridoio, quello sul lato Est, fu affrescato fra il 1579 e il 1581 da Antonio Tempesta, inizialmente, e poi da Alessandro Allori e dalla sua bottega. Le decorazioni sono "a grottesca", secondo una moda allora recente ma derivata dall'antichità romana. I soggetti sono apparentemente sfuggenti, ricchi di simbologie complesse ma anche di episodi curiosi e figurine appunto buffe, grottesche, bizzarre: mascheroni, mostri, animali, fauni, strani edifici, paesaggi misteriosi. Il tutto risolto con un grande equilibrio compositivo. La decorazione dei due corridoi successivi (Sud e Ovest), completata nel Seicento con un episodio di intervento settecentesco, raccontano invece le glorie della Toscana granducale.
