Summary:

"For many decades, numerous mountain towns have experienced massive and uncontrolled urban development, realized piecemeal by simple multiplication of the archetypical individual chalet. The considerable urban sprawl resulting from this land-use model, inseparable from private car use, has required the construction of extensive road infrastructure. In order to sustainably protect these tourist towns and their natural environment, Fiona Pia has developed an original research method. She first studies different representative high-altitude towns: Verbier, Zermatt, Avoriaz, Whistler Blackcomb, and Andermatt Swiss Alps. The detailed comparative analysis makes it possible to define project drivers, which lead the author to propose urban densification strategies and green public transport solutions. The results presented in this book can be applied to other Alpine towns and serve as a basis for solving their contemporary problems."-- Page 4 of cover.
