Summary:

"London Bridge lined with houses from front to end to end is one of the best-known images of London in the past, but little has been previously been known about the houses themselves and the people who lived and worked in them. This book uses new evidence that enables for the first time a description of the houses and their occupants, and includes specially drawn reconstructions incorporating new understanding of the bridge and its houses. The plan of the bridge and houses is also reconstructed, revealing many unexpected features and making it possible to identify the original layout, as well as to determine the dates when most of the houses were built. The ways in which the houses and their occupants changed over five and a half centuries are examined in detail, including changes in the trades conducted on the bridge, the gradual enlargement of the houses, the extensive rebuilding in 1477-1548 and 1683-96 and the removal of the houses around 1760"--Jacket
