"Is a series of images of contemporary world leaders, presidents or prime ministers waving to crowds. The work is based on found press images or pictures taken from the leader's or the government's website. The gestures are rehearsed, conventional and deliberate: leaders must not only conform to their image and the conception of their personality, but also confirm the power imputed to them. They use existing representational structures (press images, the internet) and codified visual language (the hand waving) to create an iconic image of their person and their leadership. The images making up Leaders are printed in a very light shade of gray, giving the series an immaterial, ephemeral quality. They put the viewer in a kind of twilight zone, the images of the waving politicians receding or reappearing; and most of all they evoke a very delicate balance between persona and person, image and individual. Normally anonymous, non-remarkable and stereotyped, these images regain here a direct, sensual impact, radically approaching the structures of the politics of power from their visual surface. Each image representing possible visual recreation of that one iconic image and their sheer number becoming an overwhelming display of this endless difference and exchangeability. Leaders is an ongoing project, each new presentation features new images."--Colophon
