Summary:

Detailed description of the Escorial, containing Mazzolari's full account of the monastery's architecture, sculpture, paintings, and decoration. The three chapters devoted to the decoration and contents of the three libraries discuss the meaning of the ceiling paintings, and explain how the books are arranged and cataloged. The study is of special importance, as it was written between 1575, when the library was handed over to the Augustinian monks, and 1671, the year in which a fire destroyed many valuable books and manuscripts. In one of the earliest critical notices of Leonardo da Vinci (page 87), Mazzolari praises him as one of the greatest minds Italy has ever produced; Leonardo is not only a great painter, but also a musician, architect, sculptor, engineer, and philosopher.
