Die Bedeutung der altniederländischen Malerei war im 15. Jahrhundert so groß, dass sie Humanisten wie Bartolomeo Fazio und Pietro Summonte als eine der Antike ebenbürtige ars nova galt. In dem von der Krone Aragon dominierten Mittelmeerraum wurden altniederländische Tafeln früh importiert und deren Stil von Künstlern wie dem Valenzianer Lluís Dalmau oder dem Neapolitaner Colantonio nachgeahmt.
