Notes:
"This thesis reacts to the current trend of big-box retailers being established on fringe locations of rural towns across North America. The primary body of the text will discuss how the big-box typology, fashioned for suburban locations, is used in rural towns with little or no concern for their unique context, creating a reliance on vehicular travel resulting in environmental, economic, and experiential changes to the rural town. Through an analysis of the typical suburban big-box, consideration of its historical precedents, and contemporary examples, this thesis discovers new design strategies for the big-box in the rural context. The second portion of this thesis proposes a design for a large retail space sited in the downtown of Hanover, Ontario. Further, this thesis embraces the role of architectural form as a necessary contribution to the community via the establishment of zones of interaction at the scale of the inhabitant"--Abstract.
