[Portrait of a young prize winner with his winning Mysto? Erector constructions and prize cup].
ca. 1913.
1 photoprint (silver gelatin, card-mounted) : b&w ; 12 x 18 cm. on mount 20.5 x 25.5 cm.
Possibly a Mysto Erector prize winner. In the instruction manual accompanying a Mysto Erector set of 1914 the Mysto Manufacturing Company (later the A.C. Gilbert Company) describes its prize contest: "We conduct one prize contest every year, which ends the first of March. This contest is to get ideas from boys for new models". Throughout the manual portraits of some of the prize-winners (1913, 1914) are shown alongside the illustrations of their prize-winning constructions. Two of the three constructions shown in this photograph closely resemble two which appear in the 1914 manual: the double windmill pump (p. 18) and the turn table crane (p. 22), suggesting that this young man won his prize at an earlier date and had his designs incorporated into the manual.
