Summary:

Recordings a lecture given by Pat Rasmussen, Research Scientist at Health Canada and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at University of Ottawa. Rasmussen studies the physical and chemical characteristics of house dust. Some of her findings are surprising: for example, household dust has a higher heavy metal content than street dust and dirt. Her research also looks at the factors that influence the composition of indoor dust, such as the characteristics of a house and the activities of its residents: from renovations to hobbies, and even the products that you buy and bring home. Rasmussen worked on the Canadian House Dust Study to obtain nationally representative information from 2007 to 2010 in thirteen cities with populations over 100,000. Over a thousand houses were investigated and the results are a portrait of Canadians' typical exposure to chemicals at home.
