Summary:

"This bibliography is designed to be comprehensive in scope if not in detail... The bibliography concentrates on western Europe, which has received by far the greatest scholarly attention. Those areas included in modern-day Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, and Switzerland have been given thorough coverage... we chose to give serious but somewhat less detailed attention to Austria, Scandinavia, and the eastern European countries. England seemed to us a largely separable problem, and so we have treated it in a general way. Furthermore, the Counter Reformation (or the Catholic reform movement as it is now often called) is included only where it figured importantly as an adversary and stimulus to Reformation controversy in the arts. Thus we consider the Catholic contribution to the debate over the use of images and to the initial propaganda campaigns, but Counter Reformation religious art is a matter that we touch on only indirectly."--from the Preface, pages xv-xvi.
