Melville's story is evoked here to indicate, remember and put at the centre the "frontier research", a mode of investigation literally positioned at the extremities of knowledge, at the border of what is known. The task of every research is to overcome the already known, the already given, but beyond the mainstream ways working at the limit implies addressing controversial issues, difficult to resolve with established methodologies, therefore requires "the knight's move", presupposes experimentation even in doing. Again, frontier research is aimed at refuting dominant paradigms, it operates with a high degree of uncertainty and failure.
