Space research has long favoured technological rationality and a functional approach when meeting the challenges of inhabiting extra-terrestrial space. The authors shine a spotlight on this scientific history and open up a debate around the objects and sensory experiences associated with it. At a time of unprecedented ecological crisis, investigating the issues at stake in the extra-terrestrial habitat will help us to better understand what the future holds for the ways in which we live, both on Earth and elsewhere.
