A consideration of the work of New York-based French artist Nicola L. requires the imagined resurrection of the countercultural spirit of the 1960s, the period in which she emerged as an artist. As an ambitious female artist working in an invigorated yet male-dominated art world, she was given both expansive possibilities and confining limitations. Energetic and fearless, Nicola worked across media and genres in a career spanning decades, sometimes much in the public eye, with strings of exhibitions, and at other times virtually hidden from view.
