Summary:

The 400 Years Project is a photography project looking at the evolution of Indigenous American identity and representation, and includes original photo essays, as well as licensed existing ones, to create a digital library of Indigenous photographers. The project contributes to a comprehensive understanding that Indigenous people across North America (including Hawai'i), Central America, and South America have been making photographs for their own purposes since at least the 1860s. This book presents an extensive collection of images that emphasize the depth of Indigenous photography originating in the Americas from the 19th century forward. Each entry is accompanied by a biographical sketch and information about the photographer's practice or, in the case of group projects, the scope of the final outcome -- Adapted from the introduction.
"The first book of its kind, this photography collection featuring work exclusively by Native American artists tells the story of Indigenous history through the lens of their own people, shedding new light on the understanding of Native America"-- Provided by publisher.
