Summary:

The Doldertal, a small ravine in the north of the city of Zurich, is particularly well known in the history of modern architecture as the residence of the Swiss architectural theorist Sigfried Giedion, whose book "Space, Time and Architecture" (1941) is considered a milestone in the historiography of modernism. In 1936, Giedion became involved as the builder of the two Doldertal houses by Alfred Roth and Marcel Breuer, which are still among the most important works of New Building in Switzerland today. In 1959, the architect couple Flora Steiger-Crawford and Ruedi Steiger built their own home in the Doldertal, in the immediate vicinity of the Doldertalhäuser. Crawford and Steiger are important representatives of the Swiss avant-garde, and Flora Crawford is also the first woman to receive an architecture diploma from ETH Zurich. In the same year, the Fellowhouse, another building by Alfred Roth, was built right next to the Steiger house. "Haus Steiger 1959. Flora Steiger-Crawford and Rudolf Steiger" offers for the first time a comprehensive insight into the history of the creation of this masterpiece of modern Swiss architecture. Detailed analyzes explain the central floor plan and describe the chronology, typology and construction of the building. Other contributions highlight, among other things, the reference to the local topography, the cultural context of the building, as well as important historical and contemporary references from architecture, including its famous neighbors.
