Summary:

"This Chapter is based on research and practice. Over recent years, both 51N4E and NEWROPE, the Chair of Urban Transformation at ETH Zürich, have explored the meaning and strategies of infrastructural design. Inspired by eight projects by 51N4E and four design perspectives by NEWROPE, the idea of investing in a shift towards an infrastructural approach in urban design takes shape. An infrastructural design approach starts from what is already there, responds to multiple challenges at once, and leaves room for future adaptations. Both sensitive and bold, pragmatic and imaginative, it brings stability in complex settings and allows for new meanings and practices to emerge. This publication looks across a diversity of designs to explore how this shift in approach can simultaneously widen the scope of what design can achieve, and of what infrastructures can embody. Negotiating Infrastructure is about finding the moments that trigger collective imagination, directly tapping into the values, investments, and qualities we search for as a society"--Provided by publisher.
