House and Street is a detailed reconstruction of the working and personal lives of servant women in Rio de Janeiro between about 1860 and 1910. The book dispels the myth that all domestic servants were slaves, showing that free women figured prominently among this, the largest single laboring group in the city. It challenges the notion that servants were merely laborers in the homes of others, for, besides describing their work, Lauderdale Graham traces the lives they conducted away from the watchful presence of masters. She reveals the ways in which servant women, never merely victims, were resilient human beings who, in small and large ways, took charge of their own lives. Through their everyday lives we see the surrounding events of epidemic disease, the abolition of slavery, the re-making of the urban landscape, and a subtle shift from the private exercise of power to more public forms. House and Street gives voice and image to the uneasy and ambivalent nature of domestic relations in which servants and masters viewed one another with suspicion while remaining mutually dependent. Theirs was a cautiously balanced, partially negotiated relationship that resulted in accommodations on both sides. It will interest social and cultural historians generally, as well as specialists on Latin America and scholars concerned with slavery or gender.
