Summary:

In the past rural Alberta has sheltered people with diverse geographic origins and cultural backgrounds. The housing of its people has included tipis of the Plains Indians and log buildings of the fur traders, missionaries, Metis and police; it has also included various kinds of housing built by settlers who came to the region from the 1870s on. The houses built by the early settlers who farmed and ranched in Alberta incorporated building traditions from many homelands, and the houses were constructed of local building materials which were nature's gift to the new inhabitants. Although many houses of the early settlers typified the harshness of life on the western Canadian frontier, some possessed the latest technological advances in building materials and services, and a few displayed unexpected grandeur.
