Berigny was one of the original students of the École polytechnique on its formation in 1794 and went on to have a successful career as an engineer in the service of the French government, specializing in dock and harbour design and acting as inspector general of the Department of Ponts et chaussées and secretary general of its ruling body. This collection of drawings, made by him while at the school, reflects the original fortification curriculum taught there when it was founded.
