Summary:

The Joint Centre for Urban Design, Oxford Brookes University, are celebrating their 20th anniversary in September 1993 with a conference entitled 'Making Better Places: Urban Design Now' and this book has been prepared to coincide with this event. The book is made up of contributions reflecting the current issues in urban design using real examples from practice as counterpoints. These contributions all reinforce the initiative taken by the Royal Town Planning Institute and the Royal Institute of British Architects to foster and recognize good urban design practice. The emphasis is strongly on practical issues and the book offers valuable guidance to all professionals engaged in the improvement of the urban environment.
