Summary:

The book views contemporary Indian architecture--Indian cultural institutions and art places--as public place which offers an engagement between people and their social environment. Adopting a 'habitational' approach centred on our experience of inhabiting spaces, it argues that art places should be actively engaging and inclusive. It argues for an architecture in which the everyday habitational needs, potentials and interactions of the dweller are seen as forming the basic matrix within which architectural form is situated. It showcases the Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, the National Crafts Museum New Delhi and Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai as examples of how architecture can create an artplace with which the visitor feels engaged.
