Summary:

This is the best and most beautifully illustrated history of hospitals available for the lay reader. Goldin, who has studied the development of care facilities for 20 years, weaves photographs and text into a vivid, enticing work. Although most histories of hospitals center on a single facility or region, this work surveys the development of hospitals in the West from the 13th century to the present, with emphasis on hospitals' evolving architectural design. Reproductions of period artwork emphasize for modern readers the development of medical practices through time. The author also points out that hospitals and almshouses were used primarily by poorer people, while the wealthier classes were treated in their homes. More scholarly looks at hospitals include a work coauthored by Goldin, "Hospital: A Social and Architectural History" (Yale Univ. Pr., 1975), and "The Hospital in History," edited by L. Granshaw (Routledge, 1989). However, neither work is as appropriate for the lay reader as "Work of Mercy." Recommended for all libraries. Eric D.
