Summary:

"Beatrix Jones Farrand (1872-1959) was among the first professional American women landscape gardeners. Born into a prominent New York family (she was the niece of Edith Wharton), she married the famous Yale historian Max Farrand in 1913. Charles Sprague Sargent of Harvard's Arnold Arboretum was her primary mentor and teacher." "One of the eleven founding members of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Farrand believed in using native plant materials to connect the natural and designed landscape. Her most famous extant garden is Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., which is still viewed as one of the best American neoclassicist gardens." "This volume collects much of her written work, from her gardening diary to a wide selection of essays, and includes a bibliography of primary and secondary sources."--BOOK JACKET.
