De ruïnes van paleizen in het Midden-Oosten en op Kreta bevatten al badgelegenheden. De Griekse cultuur kende het gymnasium. De Romeinen hadden thermen. In de Middeleeuwen waren er obscure badhuisjes. Lodewijk XV baadde onder het toeziend oog van zijn hele hofhouding. In de negentiende eeuw ontstonden de openbare badhuizen. Tegenwoordig heeft bijna iedereen eigen sanitaire voorzieningen. Elke cultuur, elke tijdsperiode, kent een eigen wisselwerking tussen de heersende moraal en mentaliteit en de ontwikkeling op sanitair gebied.
