Summary:

This book has its origin in the interpretation of a text partly translated to Spanish in 1988 by the authors. The author of the mentioned text (published in 1844 in Hanover) was German architect Edward Mühlenpfordt who registered his knowledge about Mexico, particularly of Oaxaca where he lived until 1827 and later returned to Germany in 1833. He left behind a series of drawings of what are considered the first drawings of the Pre-Hispanic Palaces of Mitla. As historians of architecture authors Jiménez and González Medina were strongly impressed by Mühlenpfordt descriptions: "In the north part of the Cathedral, we find the Episcopal palace, curious for its peculiar construction. In fact, the exterior of the one-floor building intended to copy the architectural style of the antique Zapotec sacerdotal palaces of Mitla. A leisurely and meticulous investigation allowed the authors to identify the reasons why the second Spanish bishop of Oaxaca, Bernardo Albuquerque, decided on a facade like that of the Palaces at Mitla for his new residence: the desire to perpetuate the memory of the auto da fe at which the last six priests of Mitla were burnt alive. The unexpected conclusion of this book, documented with care and incontrovertible, is that in Oaxaca, in Mexico, and doubtless in other Spanish colonies, the process of so-called evangelization was in fact but another name for the Inquisition.
