The philosophies of Germany's Bauhaus art school represented the distillation of the Modern Movement and yet it was only in existence from 1919 until 1933, when it was closed by the Nazis. Among its remarkable alumni were some of the most influential architects and designers of the modern age, including Mie van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, and Marcel Breuer. The building that housed the design school at Dessau in Germany was designed by Gropuis, and is a landmark not just in its architecture, but the era it represents in terms of modern visual arts.
